Advanced Medical Simulation and Testing Laboratory

Preclinical Testing

Experimental preclinical simulation is a key gateway for the safe and effective introduction of medical devices. The ability to confidently predict device performance, potential failure modes, and intervention outcomes remains a crucial goal for manufacturers and clinicians.

Through collaboration with a broad range of stakeholders our research advances patient centred, systems-based approaches to medical device and intervention design. We integrate cutting-edge experimental, computational, and materials characterisation techniques with a focus on understanding complex interfacial processes.

We offer:

  • Preclinical testing and analysis following ISO/ASTM standards and beyond
  • Application of real-world biomechanical data (e.g. gait, activity strata) in testing
  • Cadaveric testing for biomechanical and device studies
  • Explant root cause failure analysis
  • Multiscale characterisation of tissue and tissue-device constructs
  • Real-time in-situ tools to monitor complex mechanical and chemical changes
  • Bespoke surface engineering and mechanical test solutions to complex degradation processes

Implant and Tissue Assessment

AMSTL employs state-of-the-art surface, mechanical and tribological analysis from first concept to final product validation. We have a world-leading suite of unique multi-scale biomechanical simulators capable of replicating physiological loads and motions, particle analysis, and quantifying generated debris and ions across the length scales.

Corrosion and Tribocorrosion

We have established expertise in corrosion and electrochemistry for identification of degradation mechanisms of biomedical materials and specialise in the integration of mechanical and electrochemical methods for a holistic approach to assessment.

Geometric and Surface Analysis

We can conduct GD&T and surface analysis on medical devices from the centimetre to nanometre scale – including topography, form, microstructure, chemistry and mechanical properties.
